Australian Innovation Department Visits CSTEC

Sean Starmer, Counsellor (Science and Industry) of the Australian Embassy in China and Kris Browne of the Department of Industry, Innovation and Science of Australia visited the China Science and Technology Exchange Center (CSTEC) on September 14th, 2016. Zhao Xinli, Deputy Director General of the CSTEC, received the guests together with officials from the Division of American and Oceanian Affairs and the Division of International Talent and Training.

Zhao made a detailed introduction on the background, arrangements and latest progress of management reforms of China’s scientific and technological programs (special projects, funds, etc.) sponsored by the Central Government. He also talked about CSTEC’s new roles and tasks in the reform, status of implementation of the China-Australia Young Scientists Exchange Program, and contents of the Report on the Group of Twenty (G20) National Innovation Competitiveness Development, the Research Report of Economic Focus of G20 and the Comprehensive Innovation Competitiveness Index Report of G20 Countries.

The Australian side expressed appreciation of CSTEC’s achievements in policy support and think tank building. They wished to carry out real cooperation with the CSTEC in promoting exchanges between young scientists in both countries, bilateral intergovernmental cooperation in the management of S&T projects among many other areas. Zhao expressed the willingness of the Chinese side to continue deepening cooperation and exchanges in science and technology between China and Australia and wished to see the Australian side play a bigger role in the G20 Science, Technology and Innovation Ministers Meeting to be held in Beijing this November.
